Obituary



Larry Schumaier, 61, Minot, died Saturday, April 5, 2008, in his home, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Larry was born Aug. 16, 1946, on the family farm in McLean County, near Garrison, the son of Ruben and Pat (Schreiner) Schumaier. He was raised and educated in Garrison and graduated from Garrison High School in 1964.

On March 11, 1966, Larry joined the United States Marine Corps. He served one tour in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on March 8, 1968. Following his discharge he returned to Garrison and helped on the George and Gen Bovkoon farm.

On Sept. 27, 1969, Larry married Peggy Carroll at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. Following their marriage they made their home in Minot, where they raised their family. He joined his father, Ruben, and helped start Schumaier and Sons Construction, where he worked for several years. In the early 1980s he began employment with Civil Service at the Minot Air Force Base. He worked there until ill health forced him to retire.

Larry was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot, where he helped with the homebound communion and was an usher at the church. He was once active in boy scouts and loved hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He loved his entire family, but had a special place in his heart for his three granddaughters. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and many times they traveled to reunions to reunite with his many Vietnam veteran comrades. Larry was a man with many hats and it wasn’t very often he wasn’t wearing one. He was a wonderful man that will be deeply missed.

Those who shared in his life: wife, Peggy, Minot; children, Curtis (Randi) Schumaier, Berthold, Cyndi (Shane) Morlang, Minot, and Craig and his fiancee Stephanie Teslow, San Diego; three granddaughters, Katelyn Schumaier, Breana and Taya Morlang; mother, Pat Schumaier, Minot; brothers and sisters, Diane (Art) Sprenger, Hillsboro, Ore., Darold Schumaier, Glenn (Gloria) Schumaier, Sandi (Vern) Griffey, and Shelly (John) Stenberg, all Minot; mother-in-law, Doris Bertsch, Mott; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law on Peggy’s side of the family and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins survive; and best friends, Larry and Valerie Fast, Garrison.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Ruben Schumaier; his father-in-law, Vern Carroll; and a nephew, Shane Schumaier.

Funeral: Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.

Vigil prayer service: Monday, April 7, 2008, (today) at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Minot.

Visitation: Monday, April 7, 2008, (today) from noon until 5 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, and from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church.
